Many thousands of apparently healthy people would be offered medical treatment to prevent heart disease, under a radical proposal being considered by the Federal Government.

The plan, which hinges on assessing heart disease risk through a complex calculation involving age, blood pressure and cholesterol and measurements, family history, weight and several other factors, would involve screening by GPs of symptom-free people, possibly from as young as 45.
